On the twelfth day of Christmas the library brought to me...

... a collection of information superheroes!

"Reading furnishes the mind only with materials of knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours." (John Locke, 1843).

We not only furnish the 'materials of knowledge': we also help students, researchers and staff to make the most of them in their thinking and learning. Come and talk to us about ...

  • how we help develop your students' information skills and subject knowledge
  • our unique online digital literacy course
  • creating reading lists that act as learning tools
  • getting hold of material not in UEA Library
  • how we can support your own research
 ... and much more!

On the tenth day of Christmas the library brought to me...

...a brilliant variety of e-resources!
Our Find Databases service will give you access to oodles of great information sources from TV advertising analysis David Reviews, to historical, political and economic information on every country in the world from The Statesman's Yearbook

 Find Databases

Did you know?
We have access to all of the content from The Economist! It works automatically on campus but you'll need to use the library Find Databases list to access it from elsewhere. Why not take a look at their countdown to Christmas:

On the ninth day of Christmas the library brought to me...

... news that we are rather envious of Father Christmas's delivery mechanism for getting packages to people over a wide geographical area, in a very short period of time...

CCBY from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas

Ok, so we're probably not up to magic reindeer and flying sleighs... but we are reviewing our Library Interlending processes for printed and online material.

In the New Year, we plan to launch a re-vamped Interlending service:

1. We're designing a better online request form.

2. Our teams are poised to respond to your initial requests more quickly and effectively.

3. We hope we can get more information to you electronically.

So, keep an eye open for the launch in the New Year, and whilst we probably can't match Father Christmas's delivery service, we're aiming to be more responsive than before.

On the eighth day day of Christmas the library brought to me ...

Read all about it! Newspapers at UEA

Read news of the impending abolition of slavery by Mr Wilberforce in the Observer on 25 December 1791 or a review of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in the Literary Examiner on 23 December in 1843, using 19th Century BL Newspapers. You and your students can find valuable primary source materials from the 17th C to the 21st C in our newspaper databases. New to UEA – New York Times Archive, and Guardian/Observer Archive. For the latest world news, go to Nexis.

Monday 7 December 2015

On the seventh day of Christmas the library brought to me...

... an excuse to stay in bed!

You can get to the vast majority of UEA's subscription-only scholarly information from anywhere in the world - so you can stay in touch with your research field wherever you are. (Even in bed.)

Here are two easy ways to get to our scholarly resources from off campus:

Make Google Scholar show you links to UEA full-text articles
(duration: 2min 18 - skip to 0:52)

Access UEA's subscription resources including e-journals, article databases, news sources, audio and video material and much more, without having to find the pesky 'login' button
(duration: 1min 35)

On the sixth day of Christmas the library brought to me...

Not 10,000, not 50,000 but a bumper stocking full of over 100,000 e-journals.

And don't worry, we've replaced the card index drawers so it's a bit easier to find out what's available.

On the fifth day of Christmas the Library brought to me ...

Licensed to view: what’s in the Box of Broadcasts?

Whether you love or hate Christmas TV, you can explore UK radio and TV programmes from 2007 onwards using Box of Broadcasts from your office, sofa or anywhere in the UK.

On the fourth day of Christmas the library brought to me...

Consumer insight - get your message to your market.

We're often asked about the products we have for consumer data and market information, and one of the most important (and extremely underused) is Mintel. Yes, we DO have access to Mintel. Specifically market and consumer information on Food, Drink , Beauty, Automotive and Technology.

Accessing Mintel is easy, just type it into Library Search and click 'online access'.

Mintel reports can be downloaded as PDF and Powerpoint, and are broken down into really handy, useful chunks such as 'issues and insights', 'the consumer', and 'key players'. What's more, Mintel also provides reports by their expert analysts on key market trends (for instance, who is capitalising on opting out of Black Friday? Go to Mintel now to find out).

Here's what Mintel can tell us about Christmas 2015:

On the third day of Christmas the library brought to me...

An academic ebook collection that's growing all the time:

Ebook Library

Search by title, keyword, subject category, and see what's available. Browse a book for 5 minutes, then ask the library to buy if you'd like to see more.

On the second day of Christmas the library brought to me...

An online reading list system that makes it easier for me to manage my list and for my students to do their reading! Here's a 3 minute introduction to Reading Online:

Looks good, doesn't it? If you'd like to see your list in Reading Online, contact us on Lib.Reading@uea.ac.uk. Just try not to turn into this guy:

On the first day of Christmas the library brought to me...

...the answers to all my data questions!

Introducing the newest addition to UEA Library: Statista
With Statista you can use one portal to discover more than 1.5 million statistics from over 18,000 sources. This is great for all sort of applications from business need, context setting, industry research or just your own curiosity.
For example, how are UK retailers feeling about the approach of Christmas?

Statistic: Retailers' attitudes towards the Christmas trading period in the United Kingdom in 2015 | Statista

and just how much is Christmas going to cost you?

Statistic: Price of typical Christmas grocery shopping basket, ranked by grocery retailer in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2014 (in GBP) | Statista

There are also loads of other features to Statista, including industry reports, consumer insights, and opinion polls, all with the source data clearly detailed. They also make some pretty infographics which you can use to make an impact:

Best of all, they make their statistics easily downloadable in a range of formats, such as being able to easily embed them in blogs like this one! Ho ho ho.
